Cards not in the Tournament Winning Deck Archive

It has come to my attention that there is a long list of cards that do not appear in the tournament winning deck archive (TWDA). Ira got Mummify in there recently, although not as a card he intended to ever play. Here is a short list compared to how many there probably are out there:

Baleful Doll- Zero stealth, not that easy to take advantage of
Mummy's Tongue- I don't know why this hasn't made it. FoS short on pool?
Eyes of the Dead- Utter crap
Army of Apparitions- New and untested?
Crimson Fury- Cornercase
The Portrait- Ian hasn't been allowed to play this card enough, always DI'd or blocked
Fire in the Blood- Where's Jann Berger when you need him?
Poison the Well of Life- Just steal a HG or burn it with Conceal
Shoulder Drop- Usable
Elixir of Distillation- Crap
No Confidence- Almost as bad as the crap directly above
Urban Jungle- Not enough diablarie decks recently?
Divine Image- Costy, FoS usually can't fight that well anyway
Tara, the Hollow One(Mage)- Zero bleed, three pool, worthless special
Mehemet of the Ahl-I-Batin(Mage)- Zero bleed, three pool, could work with cryptic mission
Target Leg- Stupid, crap, blah
Betrayer- Wider View is too new for this to get play on the tournament scene. Still not good.
Malkavian Time Auction- This could be decent
Psychic Projection- Meh. Just play an intercept card.
The Spawning Pool- Too much set-up
Beyond Reproach- This could work....
Realm of the Black Sun- Wait, why do you want your prey to gain pool?
Terrorists- Only one life, have to pay for your bomb. Rico Loco?
Twisting the Knife- Jann Berger really wants that second round and needs a press?
Grasp the Ghostly- This should see some play
Inspire Greatness- Why does this cost a blood and require two disciplines and a younger vampire/ally? Potentially usable, probably better to do disciplineless combat.
Conquer the Beast- Mostly inferior to Trap, but not always. Could see a case for it.... (this is in a TWD, didn't see it first time around)

What does all this tell me? Build more decks!

  1. Conquer the Beast appeared in Mike Nudd's !Nos basher in 2006.

As for The Spawning Pool (and Marty Lechtansi), I'm on it! :P

  2. Ah, thanks for pointing that out. As for Marty, I have a hard time believing that he never made it in some Malk 94 deck. Laurent could even help make him Justicar for a voting malk deck.

  3. Conquer The Beast has been in 4 TWD's, though only 2 were used optimally (all minions had at least basic animalism and no equipment, or a way to gain equipment, in the deck), Nudd's being one of them. As for breaking cards into the Archive it's my opinion that Ira sort of cheated with Mummify. Anybody can put one crap card in their deck to break it into the TWDA, however, a Well-Aimed Car in a Sewer Lid deck is unoptimal but usable, for style points anyway. Mummify was completely unplayable in that deck. I managed to break in 9 cards to the TWDA, only one of which no one else has used yet, and they were all useful in the deck, not even a W-AC example in the bunch. Not that I'm some innovative player (I would have more official TWD's if that were true) but if one is going to try to break in a crap, or limited, card at least make it playable in the deck.

  4. I agree. Jeff Yin, who should be at our August 13th tournaments, wanted to make a deck where mummify actually made sense. We haven't come up with one and he's not a deckbuilder, so it is on the back burner. His minionless deck did manage a VP or two at a qualifier we had maybe 1 1/2 years ago at this point. I think Betrayer can work, especially with the prevalence of certain crypt cards (i.e. Cybelle, that !gangrel chick that usually accompanies Cybelle, Dmitra, Lutz, etc.) and Wider View. I've noticed that some cards are not spelled correctly in the TWDA or there are other typos, which may make it seem like there are fewer/no copies of something in there. Sins of the Cauchemar is not in there, but Ben Swainbeck put in 3x "Sins of Cauchemar."

  5. Hard to get The Portrait in a TWD when I only play Toreador in events that don't qualify. What's especially hard about playing Toreador is that I actually have a Toreador deck in the TWDA ...

  6. Was it Soul Painting that keeps getting hosed then, Ian?
